Sir David Attenborough urges gardens to consider butterflies

In an effort to save the beautiful garden insects, Attenborough stated that the loss of butterflies is changing the way that back gardens and the countryside look, given the fact that in the old days you could hardly see the flowers due to the amount of butterflies that were flitting around.

He commented that even in his own garden in Richmond the amount of butterflies he sees on a regular basis has declined greatly.

Attenborough is the president of Butterfly Conservation and is warning the public as part of a joint campaign led by the charity and Marks & Spencer to save butterflies and moths, that if action is not taken now, soon Britain will lose some of its most cherished species of butterflies.

In the last 100 years five butterfly species have become extinct, with another 60 species of moths vanishing from the UK completely.

Of the butterflies that are seriously threatened is the High Brown Fritillary which has seen its numbers drop by almost 80% in the last 25 years.

Those who want to help protect butterflies should consider planting colourful plants in their gardens that attract the insects to breed and seek shelter in gardens.  The rapid disappearance of food and shelter is one key reason that has led to the serious decline in butterfly numbers.
