Many people feed their garden birds on a regular basis, but this year when you head out to the garden centre it is important to keep in mind that in order to properly maintain a wildlife friendly garden you need to use good quality seed mixes that contain clean peanuts and sunflower seeds to minimize the risk of spread of, or introducing any type of disease to your garden.
In addition, due to the fact that birds frequently pass viral and bacterial diseases via their droppings, it is important to keep all bird tables and feeders clean, which means regular cleaning throughout the year.
Although many people believe that birds only need fed during the winter when there is not as much greenery out, the RSPB and the British Trust for Ornithology both advise the public to feed garden birds throughout the year because the birds start to depend on the nutritious quality of the recommended feeds. Black sunflower seeds, mixed seeds, peanuts, and sunflower hearts all make excellent choices.
It is important to also keep in mind that various bird species will prefer various types of food, so the more options that you can offer at your feeders and bird tables the more birds will be inclined to drop in for a visit. With this in mind, occasionally offering kitchen scraps such as cheese, fruit, and bread crumbs will attract a larger audience that includes birds such as blackbirds, sparrows, collared doves, and many more.
