For over a decade, mild winters have led to early springs, but with a price, as wildlife and plants start to hatch and blossom to soon, leading to early frost death and insects come out from hibernation only to be killed. However, according to conservation advisor Matthew Oakes, this spring should be more like older times with a full spring that comes when it is ready.

Oakes is an adviser to the National Trust and regularly keeps records of the first sightings in nature every year and stated that London is ahead of the country in welcoming spring and the wildlife it brings with it because of the ‘heat island’ that the area creates with so many heated homes and cars.

However, Oakes was careful to note that outside of the London area spring is coming late this year with no bumblebee sightings and little growth in the woods. He continued to say that the wild garlic and bluebells are just starting to spike as well as the beginnings of primroses. He predicted that bluebells and other similar flowers may not even be in full bloom until the middle of May.
