The Best Condolence Plants

“The first of all single colors is white … We shall set down white for the representative of light, without which no color can be seen; yellow for the earth; green for water; blue for air; red for fire; and black for total darkness.” — Leonardo Da Vinci.

Flowers like colors carry a lot of meaning throughout the course of history and tradition. Especially white. There are white weddings, white baptisms and christenings. White flowers also decorate venues for funerals because white is the color of condolence.

Though the colour white evokes innocence, it also eludes sensationalism and when your close friend or family member is going through a hard time you have to show sensation in order to show sympathy and empathy for their lose. Sensationalism is neither good nor bad; it is about feeling all emotions. This is why white flowers are present at both weddings and funerals.

Also purification because you genuinely feel sympathy and remorse on your loved one’s behalf. This is why you cannot go wrong with choosing flowers in white to show respect.

Memorial wreaths are a good alternative, however if you wanted to add a bit of color to the white flowers. Red carnations last long and don’t welt, which is why they are a great base for wreaths. Chrysanthemums, particularly white ones are also a good flower  to include in wreaths because they allude peace, truth, reverence and modesty.

Circles represent eternal life after death and this is why wreaths are very common at funerals. Though historically they used to be shaped as a horseshoe because the opened top symbolized a journey from life to heaven.

White lilies are a good choice because of its universal meaning of hope and purity across many cultures. In Roman Catholicism, for example these flowers are associated with the Virgin Mary. These lilies are also the flower of Easter and promise the hope of life because white lilies grew from the sweat of Jesus Christ in his final hours. It is also a flower of sweetness and completion of life in ancient Greece.

Azaleas plants are another good choice to convey your sympathies because they mean fragility, passion and temperance. These flower covered shrubs come in many forms and colors. There are over 10,000 types of these flowers because they come in purple, white, yellow, orange, red and pink.

In Chinese culture, the Azaleas plant also means thoughtfulness and pensiveness which definitely suits the occasion of funerals. Poet Du Fu from the Tang Dynasty made this plant famous by dubbing it, ‘A sea of Blood Red Azaleas.’
