The health benefits of gardening just keep on coming

Researchers indicate that spending around four hours of light gardening every week lowers one’s chances of having kidney stones by about a third. A study has indicated that even some little exercise can greatly reduce the risk. Previous research has shown that when one is overweight, their chances of having kidney stones doubles.

The condition can be quite painful and one may have to go for a surgery to correct the problem. However, there is relief for many people since Washington School of Medicine has been able to find that being physically active reduces the chances of kidney stones forming. The research has recommended, one hour of moderate jogging at around 6 mph, four hours of light gardening or three hours of average walking at 2mph. The team has also found out that by consuming more than 2200 calories daily, one increased their chances of developing kidney stones by up to 42%.

Matthew Sorensen and his colleagues at the Washington School of Medicine conducted a study to find out if energy intake and expenditure had any influence in the formation of kidney stones. The study involved 84,225 women who were participating in the Women’s Health Initiative that had been getting some information like physical activity and dietary intake in women from as early as the 1990s.

Dr. Sorensen indicated that some little exercise greatly reduced the risk of kidney stones. Dr. Sorensen added that being aware of the amount of calories one took and watching their weight and taking the necessary efforts to exercise would ensure the overall health of patients as well as reduce the chances of them developing kidney stones.

Even though the study was done on women only, exercise is likely to have the same effect on men too. Dr. John Lieske of Mayo Clinic released an accompanying editorial that focused on diet, increased intake of fluids and normal dietary calcium, moderate protein, lower sodium and reduced dietary oxalate being the center of counseling done on patients who were suffering from kidney stones. He added that the recommendation for moderate physical activity by Dr. Sorensen was also essential.
