Allotment gets new life as community garden

A community garden with a pond, seating and an orchard has been made from transforming a neglected Yeovil allotment that was overgrown has had it brambles and nettles cleared and replaced with plants, fruit trees and native hedgerows by the district council

The space on Penn Hill has been brought back to life by the Countryside Ranger team with additional help from volunteers, locals and the cub scouts and best of all; the Wessex Water’s Watermark scheme has given a £300 grant to the project.

Rachel Lappage, a Countryside Ranger, says the goal is to increase the wildlife value and make the area a real asset and this will be a real example for the many schools and community groups that come to the Rangers for advice and prove to them that they can succeed in their own areas.

She added that in both the planning and digging stages work was done hand and hand with the community making for a true joint effort giving the community a green space that works for them say a space that before was totally unused is now a really special place due to the help of all in the community.
