Vertical gardening solves the problems of small gardens

Generally the size of peoples outdoor spaces in the country is shrinking and this is not often a welcome change. Many people enjoy gardening as well as growing their own food and with limited garden sizes this is something that becomes more challenging. Fortunately, there is an alternative if you have a small garden that will maximise the amount of space you can use for growing flowers, or your own food.

Vertical gardening is a method of maximising the amount of space you have in your garden by stacking growing spaces on top of each other. There are many items that you can use for support of these vertical gardens in your current home, including fences. As well as being practical, a vertical garden can be a great way to improve the look of your green space, no matter how small it is.

There are some plants that grow very well on chain-link fences and these include, grapes, cucumbers, peas, and a variety of melons and winter squashes. If you want to add a bit of colour to your garden, then as well as these food plants, you could also add some climbing plants such as honeysuckle, roses, or wisteria. When you are putting these plants in place, make sure that you tie them into the fence so that they don’t have to bear all of the load themselves.

Pocket gardens can be a great place to grow things such as bulbs, succulents, strawberries, azaleas, lettuce, and ferns. There are also particular types of pocket garden you can get which follow a particular theme, such as one that can be used for growing herbs. Alternatively, if you would rather grow flowers then you can get pocket gardens that are themed towards summer or spring flowers. The pocket garden can be a wonderful addition to any vertical garden.

Once you have started vertical gardening the chances are that you will realise that it is a fantastic way to maximise your gardens efficiency, as well as making it look lovely. Soon enough you will be wanting to cover all of the fences in your garden with vertical gardens. Watering a vertical garden is also very easy, but you should remember to always do this from the top, to ensure that all plants get enough water to survive.

Fences are the normal place that people decide to install vertical gardens and there are many different types of fence that can be used in their construction. There are some types that are better than others however and now we’re going to look at a few of these.

Chain-link fencing, which we mentioned above, is definitely one of the best types as it provides a perfect structure for climbing plants. Adding plants to chain-link fences can also be a great idea as it will make the fence much more attractive. You don’t have to worry about rusting because the plants will not be able to damage the fence.

Using wood fences can be a good option, but you should be aware that the plants can cause offence to rot. This can mean that you might have two replace the fence more often than you would if there were no plants on it. A great alternative can be to screw plant pots into the fence as this will keep the plants away from the fence and prevent moisture from seeping into it.

Vinyl fences can be one of the most difficult types for growing a vertical garden because they are difficult for plants to grip onto. Fortunately, there is an easy solution and all a gardener needs to do is prop a trellis up against the fence and this will provide something for the plants to climb up.
