Stewart, the leading name in UK gardening products, has now sealed a deal with Straight PLC which will see them become the sole distributor to UK garden centres of Harcostar’s great range of water butts and their accessories.

Since they first began back in 1945, Stewart have built themselves an enviable reputation for delivering innovation, quality products and outstanding customer support in the UK gardening industry. By securing this exclusive distribution deal with Harcostar and their premier range of water butts, they have greatly enhanced their product portfolio.

Harcostar’s water butts are manufactured in the UK from recycled HDPE, and offer a vast range of capacities which will suit the potential needs of customers. You can choose from a 100ltr Space Sava right through to the traditional barrel style butts with capacities of 114ltr, 168ltr or 227ltr, and up to the magnum with a whopping 350ltr capacity. All butts come with a 5yr guarantee, hose fit taps and child safety lids where applicable.

The complementing range of accessories include stands, rain diverters, taps, overflow and linking kits, which allow water butts to be linked together or connected to the majority of UK downpipes.

Richard Butler, Stewart’s CEO, explained that the water butts would carry the Harcostar prestige branding which will now be featured in the Stewart Buyers’ Guide. He said that they were delighted to team up with Harcostar to offer a premium and comprehensive range.

The Harcostar range includes:

The Rain Trap is designed to fit into all regular downpipes of 63, 68, 80 and 100mm diameter, plus 61 and 65mm square. The flexible connecting hose enables the water storage container to be placed in the most convenient position. Full assembly instructions are supplied with each rain trap. The connector easily fits into the pre-drilled hole at the top of each Harcostar water butt

The Linking Kit enables two water storage containers to be connected together to allow an even greater volume of water to be stored. The two connectors easily fit into the pre-drilled holes at the top or rear of the Harcostar water butt.

Depending on the application, the Overflow Kit is essential when a rain trap is not being used to allow the excess water in the container to be re-directed to a suitable drain or soak-away. The connector easily fits into the pre-drilled hole at the top of the Harcostar water butt.

The Fastflow Tap is an accessory for those wishing to fill their watering cans faster. The tap is suitable for water storage containers with a ¾” BSP thread or non-threaded tap hole.

The Hose Connector Tap is a uniquely designed tap compatible with most hose connectors, suitable for nearly all types of water storage containers with a ¾” BSP threaded or non-threaded tap hole.

The Water Butt Stand is a unique stand designed to raise water butts safely to facilitate ease of use with watering cans etc. This is a purpose-designed alternative to the conventional method of raising butts to a convenient height.

All accessories are designed to be fitted easily to the water storage containers. They will also suit existing Harcostar and other manufacturers’ containers providing suitable inlet holes can be drilled.

The Harcostar Child Safety Lid is fitted as standard to the 114, 168 and 227 litre water butts and to the Magnum Barrel. The lid may also be fitted to most other butts, however the diameter of the lid has to be checked. This design feature gives peace of mind where small children are concerned and will also avoid animals displacing the lid.

The actual device goes by different names with some people calling it a Feng Sui item due to the fact that the copper rain chains help produce a very calm and soothing sound. Many people believe that as the sound of charms float through the air the sound creates a positive sound that helps increase the mood of the soul and heart of those in the home.

Another name that it is referred to as is Kusari Doi which was created by the Japanese due to the fact that temples in the countries often use it. Now you can find the device in many homes located right under the gutter. The small rain chain is simply inserted under the gutter spout so that when the rain water runs through it the sound is created. The chain simply goes through each cup that has a hole and the rest of the creation simply needs a good solid rainfall in order to start working. What is more, users can choose the trinkets in various shapes and designs to make sure that aesthetically they get a pattern they are satisfied with for their own home use and decoration.

Different regions of the world have different biospheres and in order to see gardening success you have to adapt your garden to the external environment. In tropical regions the humidity and downpours of rain mean that having a thatched roof is popular as it can be quickly pulled over a garden to protect plants from rain.

In contrast, in the northern hemisphere you will find a very different type of garden. In Scandinavia you will find thickly walled gardens are popular and these have also been adopted in parts of the USA.

In the UK the type of building that you have in your garden varies greatly. In Kent you can find orchard houses, summerhouses will be found in Devon, in Yorkshire you will find potting sheds and in Scotland you will find holiday cabins. What is clear from this is that is what is built in a garden changes with the needs of the local people as well as the terrain.

In Europe initially gardens were used as a place for religious worship but in the 13th century they use mostly changed for the cultivation of vegetables and fruits. During this time a great many glass structures were created to optimise the growth of fruit and vegetables. After this change, the next was the construction of buildings in the garden as a demonstration of wealth. Towers, treehouses, and even temples were seen to be deconstructed in the gardens and estates of the wealthy.

It is clear that throughout history, buildings in the garden have been constructed to serve more than just a functional purpose. It is a room that explores the culture of the country and provides a space for work and play.

The UK experienced a rather wet summer, but The Environment Agency has recently said that some parts of the country are still in drought. A Rain Garden Kit is a great way to make use of rainwater that falls on your roof. You can find these kits at www.raingardenkits.co.uk and they come in an exciting range that offers an innovative use for excess rainwater.

The owner of the company is Chris Killingbeck and he started up a year ago. He has commented, “I’m surprised at the amount of interest we have had in people who want to start a rain garden. People are beginning to realise that water is a precious commodity and by harvesting rainwater in the autumn it can be used in the spring when planting occurs. Rainwater is the perfect kind of water for growing a great deal of plants, these kits can be especially appealing to children and will give them a very positive experience of nature and gardening.”

This is no new invention, people in drier areas have been storing rain for centuries. In areas which are heavily populated the harvesting of rainwater has become common as the amount of water available becomes less. This is becoming true in the United Kingdom, where as once water was not meted many water companies are starting to install devices to limit how much your house can use. Cities are particularly poor at using their rainwater as it generally it simply flows into a sewer.

Rain garden kits have been described as an easy way to make your garden more environmentally friendly, they are easy to build and affordable. They are also not limited to people who live in the countryside, and compact ones are available for people who have small gardens in urban areas.

Chris has commented about the product, “water butts are something commonly used in a lot of gardens, but once they have reached capacity any overflow water simply goes into the sewer. These rain gardens take this overflow water and use it for growing vegetables or filling ponds. One of the most popular kits we offer is the herb wheel, which retails for less than £100. This can stand alone or form part of a larger rain garden.”

2011 saw more rainfall than 2010 but has been drier than the three years prior to that, according to figures from the Met office. An advocate of rain gardens is Don Potts, he is an environmental consultant and has commented, “there are water shortages going on all over the world, even in this country we are seeing droughts quite regularly. A Rain Garden Kit is a great way to establish valuable mini wetlands which are a valuable contributor to the environment as the benefits a great deal of wild animals.” If you want to find out more about starting your own rain garden then visit the company’s website at www.raingardenkits.co.uk.

Everyone has different ways of enjoying themselves and their lifestyles; some like to have people in and have a large party whilst other would rather enjoy the intimate company of family.

But there is one common denominator the night for most does not stop when it gets dark and therefore it is important to have garden lights fitted on the outside of your house. The benefits of the lights are numerous but firstly they help you to continue the lifestyle of entertaining and it is an inexpensive and effective way to create a comfortable ambiance and a beautiful home.

The aesthetics of a home can be greatly improved with lighting and it does not have to be relegated to just the back garden. You can install lights in the front area and therefore offer welcoming warmth to the home or for when you arrive home after dark on those winter nights.

One important aspect of having lighting is the safety issue, especially for those families that have a number of little ones that like to run all over the place and get into loads of mischief. Also with lights you can enjoy your garden more in the autumn and winter time when the sun tends to set quicker than most people like. Just a patio heater, a cup of tea and you are all set to enjoy your garden to its fullest.

The number one tip: don’t cut your grass too short. About a third of the existing length is the best guide, even if you’ve let it get way too high. In that case you’ll have to cut it more often for a while, but after a few weeks it will be back to an ideal height of 3 to 41/2 inches. This allows the grass to develop deeper roots and retain moisture better, which in turn allows for healthier grass and less watering.

Keep the mower blades sharp. Dull blades make for sloppier cuts, tearing off chunks rather than snipping cleanly. Hint: if you have them cleaned at the end of each season, you’ll avoid the line-up of procrastinators who left it until spring. Also, do your mowing when the grass is fairly dry; wet grass is harder to cut, and messier. Don’t go at it during the hottest hours of the day as excessive heat can damage the lawn.

The best time to water is in the morning before it gets hot; it’s better for the grass and you won’t lose so much water to evaporation. Don’t follow the same pattern every time you mow; alternate north-south and east-west each time so you don’t establish wheel ruts.

A final tip that may be anathema to tidy-freaks, but good for the lawn: leave the cuttings in place every three or four times you mow. They provide excellent mulch with vital nutrients that will help your grass to flourish.

They have great benefits like being healthy, relaxing and extremely fun. Now is the time to convert your thoughts to reality. The environment is in need of your help and it is time that we all pitch in together to give the environment the gift of life.

The thought of building your own greenhouse may never have entered your mind because you probably think it to be too difficult. The truth of the matter is that it is much easier than most may think. You do not have to be a rocket scientist to build one it is something you can be very proud of when finished.

The key to start is to build it where there will be a great deal of sun. And eastern and western exposure is best and that is even more important if you will be growing fruits and vegetables. This exposure enhances the amount of sun light. Do not worry if only semi shaded areas are your choice, they work as well.

Salvaged materials in construction will keep your costs down so you can invest more in irrigation and heating systems. Where you live will depend if you need to prepare for cold weather by using insulation are if you are in a warm area you may need shade control.

Siding for your greenhouse could be fibreglass or glass. Both are durable and do not break as easy as plastic. Adequate ventilation is needed as well as good humidity control. The plants you want to raise will determine the climate control you keep. Ventilation is one of the biggest keys to a successful greenhouse, without it your plants will suffer tremendously. Go green and enjoy what you can do on your own and at the same time help the environment.

When you’re working in the garden strong shoes and gloves are very important to ensure that you’re well protected as you go about your work. Often when you’re in the garden you’ll have to be pulling at weeds and branches and other nuisances in your garden, and often this can be quite trying on your hands. Buying good protective gloves therefore is a must, and you’ll be able to find lots of different kinds if you look online or in your local garden centre, and in many cases you’ll be able to find them in different sizes for women, men and children so that everyone in the family can help out in the garden. Most of these gloves are made from a densely woven fabric, and these are good for light garden duties or for simply keeping your hands clean whilst you work. Other, more heavy duty gloves, are classed as “all purpose” and have a special latex coating to protect your hand from sharp branches or thorns in the garden, and are also water proof for working with ponds and wet soil or compost.

As for shoes, we all need waterproof shoes that are strong and sturdy when we’re in the garden, especially if we have a pond or large patches of soil that we need to walk across in order to plant flowers or vegetables and then harvest them when they’re ripe. You can find comfortable clog shoes, which are made from the same durable latex coated plastic that wellingtons are made from and comfortable pump style garden shoes made from the same materials. These not only ensure that your feet stay clean and dry as you work, but you can also be assured that they will stop your shoes being punctured by any sharp stones in the soil or any sticking out branches that you might stand on. You can find these gardening shoes in all shapes and sizes, including strong men’s shoes, and if you’re looking for basic wellingtons you can usually find them in an exciting range of different colours to make you feel more individual as you garden. The same goes for gloves, whilst many of the men’s’ gloves are plain colours, a lot of the women’s and children’s gloves that you can buy from stores come with lovely patterns like ladybirds or flowers to make them more quirky and fun. These kinds of pretty items are perfect for getting children to help outdoors!

There are many ways that metal work in the garden can help improve the visual attractiveness of a garden space. At the same time that the garden becomes more visually appealing, the overall worth of the property will increase as well, making metal work a viable investment if you choose your pieces wisely and create an attractive cohesive theme. With this thought in mind, there are several common themes that you can work from as well as a wide selection of metal work available to help spruce up the visual effect of a garden.

First off, before you start to look at the metal work in the garden that is available for purchase, you should look at the type of metal materials and coats that are available. Metal work can come in a variety of shades and colour variation such as white, gold, bronze, silver, and black among other choices.

This is because metal can be painted and its colours can be altered, so you need to sit down and contemplate what colour will compliment your garden the best and suit your visual image. While you can mix metal types in a garden, it is best to stick to a related and complementary colour scheme or the entire visual effect will be thrown off.

After choosing what type of metal work in the garden will best suit your property, the next step is to take a close look at what type of metal work is available to place in your garden. There are two categories of common metal work that you can choose from, items that will be helpful to you such as a hose butler or flower vase holders and items that are simple accents to a garden area such as gates, trellises, and benches. Of course, depending on your purpose these categories may overlap into each other, but essentially this is what you will have to choose from.

Flower holders shaped like cones are excellent pieces of metal work that will compliment your garden while also helping to support plants that may be falling over causing them to wilt. This casual add-in will help add a strong visual appeal to your garden and aid in reviving a plant that otherwise may be on its way out. Along the same lines, dramatic trellis metal works can help emphasize the beauty of climbing plants and vines while adding a little visual stimulation to the side of a home or garden shed.

If you simply want to accent your garden without changing any landscaping designs, you may want to consider purchasing metal works in the garden such as benches or gating. Metal benches often turn a normal garden into an aesthetic classic garden and are great for days when you want to enjoy some sunshine and observe the wildlife in your garden. Gates can help keep predators out so that wildlife thrives in your garden and helps provide a stunning classic frame for your garden making them a worthwhile purchase as well.

If you’re on the lookout for a new lawn mower this season and feel like making an environmentally sound investment, you need look no further than the range of Rotak Li-Ion lawnmowers from Bosch. They are designed and engineered to service the modern gardener with performance, energy efficiency and durability.

Over recent times the engineers at Robert Bosch GmbH head quarters have taken the cordless, battery-powered lawnmower to new heights of design and performance. The cordless rear roller lawnmower range from Bosch now comprises three models: the Bosch Rotak 34 LI Cordless Lawn Mower, the Bosch Rotak 37 LI Cordless Lawn Mower and the Bosch Rotak 43 LI Cordless Lawn Mower. All machines in the Rotak Li-Ion lawn mower range produce outstanding mowing performance, as good as some small petrol or corded mowers, yet without the annoying and often dangerous trailing electrical cable or messy petrol engine.

Lithium-Ion battery technology is the outstanding feature of these lawn mowers. The Rotak 43 LI is supplied with two 36-volt batteries, capable of cutting 150m³ to 300m³ of lawn per battery with no self-discharge or memory effect. Another great advantage of the Li-Ion batteries are the recharge times; fully charged from empty in only one hour and up to 80% in only 30 minutes!

Adding to these already impressive features is the ‘Efficient Energy Management’ system that can increase the running time by 10% – 20%, depending on the lawn and mowing conditions. Last, and probably most important of all, the Bosch Rotak Lithium-Ion lawn mowers use very small amounts of energy in comparison to petrol lawnmowers, causing ten times less CO2 emissions.

Bosch Rotak Lithium-Ion lawn mowers are available at www.lawnmowersdirect.co.uk. You can also telephone them on 01603 458 916 should you wish to discuss any aspect of the Bosch lawn mower range. One of their trained sales staff will be happy to advise you.
